John Reid – Destination Namibia: A Photographer’s Perspective

John will be talking about a trip he made in 2016 to Namibia and his landscape photography in the Namib-Naukluft National Park,
a Himba Village (people & culture) and wildlife photography in Etosha National Park.

Street Parade. Starting from behind the old DOC offices on Gibson Quay, down Sewell Street to the Town Clock, down Weld Street to Revell Street swinging out around the back of New World and ending at the junction of Weld and Revell Street outside Stumpers. The Hokitika Lions will be selling tickets to the “Vote for a Float” which includes a mystery gift sponsored by local individuals and businesses. An after parade prizegiving then takes place, prizes include “public’s choice”.…

16 December Westland Industrial Heritage Park Startup Day

 Working Machinery Museum Family friendly – free entry Open most days. Engine Startup and Open Days Third Saturday of the month. A group of dedicated volunteers restoring artifacts from Westland’s Industrial past to running condition for public display. Allow an hour to visit to enjoy the collection.

16 December Christmas at Hokitika Beach

Back by popular demand and with support from the Westland District Council Christmas Fund Left Coast Events-Aotearoa, New Zealand looks to grow and develop this event for its second and now annual running. Christmas at Hokitika_NZ Beach 2017 will follow a similar mould to 2016, food, family, fun, games and music. The big bearded fella Santa will call in for a lollie scramble and some photos too. 21 Jan Sand Dunes Classic Golf Event

For over 25 years, teams have gotten their best golf clubs out to test their skills along the Hokitika Beach. Often in fancy dress, teams are tested with many sand traps, variable weather and an occasional exciting crossing of the Hokitika River mouth. Prizes and BBQ are the reward at the end of this unique golf event.

25 – 29 Jan Driftwood & Sand

Held annually in late January, participants are invited to express themselves using any materials they find on the beach. And the beach provides some amazing raw materials. The sculpture competition is judged at the end of the festival week and the sculptures are left for all to enjoy until the sea reclaims them.


29 – 31 Jan Woodstock Rally

This is run annually by the West Coast Touring Motorcycle Club and has become a premier event on the motorcycle touring circuit. Participants camp on site and enjoy food stalls, free tea & coffee, live entertainment and a no attitudes allowed environment.

27 Jan Westland A&P Show

The annual Westland A&P Show is a great family day out. Entertainment, rides, livestock, wood chopping events and much more. http://westlandapshow.co.nz/

9 – 10 Feb Speight’s Coast to Coast Multisport Race

Date : 9 and 10 Feb 2018

The Speight’s Coast to Coast is a multi-sport event that has been held for over 30 years. It traverses the South Island of New Zealand from Serpentine Beach on the Tasman Sea to Brighton Beach on the Pacific Ocean. Over either one or two days competitors cycle, run and kayak through some of New Zealand’s most beautiful terrain. www.coasttocoast.co.nz
